Syzygy is the alignment of three celestial bodies, for example a planet, moon, and star.
In mid 2014, years after Skuld moved to Tokyo, he returned to NYC (where Amputee was formed) on the way to attend MDF. At the same time, Tøm Vøid, leader of Australian black metal band Thrall made the same trip. Skuld had met Vøid in Tokyo on Thrall's Japan tour. Given the rare opportunity, Skuld invited Vøid to the studio with Ruhin, the guitarist of Amputee.
From the start, the three played together with ease, the addition of Vøid allowing Ruhin to easily branch off into lead flourishes. This session resulted in the three tracks of Amputee's "Syzygy".
The recording sat while other projects were pursued and after years, the band convened to pick up and set to work on what is now "Syzygy". The raw tracks were edited and bass and vocals added. The whole thing was reverse engineered and made unlike any traditional album. The closest thing that comes to mind is Darkthrone's "Goatlord" as an album created in a similar fashion. In fact, the band thought of it as a guide while approaching their own music.
Although the three songs of the album were written in the same session, the sonic range varies dramatically. This is made more conspicuous by the different vocal approaches throughout the album; ranging from black metal growls and shrieks to rollicking and strident passages that bring to mind Celtic Frost. Additionally, every track is written as a story in the form of a poem, lacking any verse/chorus structure. Skuld drew on varying lyrical topics, from current events to biblical lore as well as personal life choices.
In creating the album, the band faced several hurdles, most obviously that the members live on opposite sides of the planet. Communication was slow, but steady. Aside from this, there was the limitation of the Syzygy recording itself which was done with a cellphone. However, at a certain point, the band realized in their effort to create an uncompromising album with sprawling arrangements and old school sensibilities that they were at the same time reliant on modern technologies. The same album would not be possible to make even at the time of the band’s formation in 2007. So this was embraced and the band used everything at their disposal in order to finish the album and even include a cover track of “Reaper” by Bathory.
